History of Concepcion, Chile
The history of Concepcion dates back to the 1550s, when it was founded by Pedro de Valdivia to the north of the Bio-Bio River. The site is today known as Penco. When Concepcion was discovered, it was known as Concepcion Del Nuevo Extremo. The city was an important military site for Chile.

Concepcion was made the point of entry for the forces of the Spanish Army, when the Vice royalty of Peru tried to conquer Chile. Concepcion politicians and soldiers became a significant political force in the newly-independent country. After Chile go its independence, Concepcion politicians and soldiers became an integral part of its government.

In 1751, after a very powerful earthquake, Concepcion was moved farther away from the sea. The residents of Concepcion were then re-located in Mocha valley. Then previous location where it was first located is called as Penco. The new city of Concepcion became the head city of the Intendancy of Concepcion.

The Intendancy of Concepcion had an Irish man known as Ambrose O’Higgins. The oath of the independence of Chile was taken by his son on January 1818 at the main square of Concepcion. Ever since then the main square has become an important site for the people of Concepcion. Today, it is known as Plaza de la Independencia.


Santiago

Penguin colonies in Seno Otway and Magdalena Island:

Seno Otway and Isla Magdalena shelter a couple of penguin colonies. These colonies have a wide reputation of being the nesting sites for Magellanic penguins. Salamanca


Salamanca, Chile is a commune in Choapa Province of Chile. It is located 30 kilometers east of Illapel, the administrative center of the province and 316 kilometers north of Santiago. Salamanca, Chile can easily be reached from Los Vilos.


Salamanca is the only settlement on the bank of the Choapa River. It lies within the Choapa valley. The town was officially founded in 1844 by the then governor of Illapel Joaquin de Ceballo. Most of population of Chile is nominally Catholic and Salamanca is no exception.The Choapa River which serves the city rises in the Andes, at the confluence of the streams Totoral, Leiva and Del Valle. The river then flows through the town of Salamanca before it meets with its main tributary, the Illapel River.

Salamanca has a mild Mediterranean climate. It has relatively hot dry summers which last from November to March. During this time temperatures may reach up to 35 degrees Celsius or 95 degrees Fahrenheit on the hottest days.

Winter lasts from June to August. They are more humid, with typical maximum daily temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius or 59 degrees Fahrenheit. The minimum temperature is a few degrees above freezing. Occasional snowfall occurs on higher suburbs of the city. The mean rainfall is 312.5 millimeter per year.

The town has a good network of buses. Bus companies provide passenger transportation from Salamanca to most areas of the country. Many buses also provide parcel-shipping and delivery services. Taxicabs can usually be found on the streets of Salamanca. They are painted black with yellow roofs. The unmarked taxis may be called up by telephone. Colectivos are also popular in this part of Chile. They are shared taxicabs that carry passengers along a specific route, for a fixed fee. The road conditions of the town are better than other small town in the country.
